What is the RHFAC process?
Learn how the Rick Hansen Foundation Accessibility Certification (RHFAC) process works—from initial assessment to final rating. We break down key steps and common questions to help you better understand how certification supports the creation of accessible, inclusive spaces.
What does an RHFAC Professional do?
An RHFAC Professional conducts on-site evaluations to assess the accessibility of buildings and sites using standardized scoring criteria. Their role is to identify barriers and highlight opportunities for improvement, supporting organizations in creating inclusive, functional spaces for all users.
What are the levels of RHFAC certification?
The Rick Hansen Foundation Accessibility Certification offers two achievement levels: Standard and Gold. Each level reflects how well a site meets specific accessibility criteria, with Gold recognizing exceptional commitment to inclusive design.
How long does the certification process take?
The timeline can vary based on project size and readiness, but most RHFAC certifications take a few weeks from the initial assessment to receiving your final rating—provided all requirements are met.
What properties are eligible for RHFAC certification?
RHFAC certification is available for a wide range of spaces, including commercial buildings, public institutions, and large multi-residential properties. Eligible sites may include offices, schools, libraries, recreation centres, retail spaces, and transit hubs—whether newly constructed or existing. Properties must offer public access and meet minimum occupancy requirements to qualify for assessment.
